Filter Coffee Dose: How Much Coffee for Your Cup

Updated October 2026 · Filter Recipe Series

Dose is the weight of dry ground coffee. In the Filter Recipe Series it isn't fixed: it comes from how much coffee you want to make and the ratio for your bean density, across all 121 recipes and any yield from 150 to 1000 ml.

The short answer

Dose = yield ÷ ratio. For the default 190 ml cup that's 15.8 g for the darkest roasts, 12.7 g in the middle and 10.6 g for the lightest. Choose your yield on the recipe page and the dose scales with it.

How it's worked out

Dose = yield ÷ ratio

Yield is how much coffee you want to make: the coffee in your cup or carafe, weighed under a drip stand. The ratio comes from your bean density, from 1:12 for the darkest roasts to 1:18 for the lightest. Divide one by the other and you have your dose.

Dose = yield ÷ ratio

190 ml ÷ 15 = 12.7 g (Recipe 61)

On each recipe page, choose your yield and the dose scales with it. Your choice carries through when you press Extract More or Extract Less, so you only set it once.

Why yield, not brew water?

The grounds soak up and keep some water, and how much varies with the dose and roast level. Basing the dose on what reaches the cup takes that out of the equation.

Across the series

Dose by coffee density

For the default 190 ml yield, the dose falls from 15.8 g for the darkest roasts to 10.6 g for the lightest. Light roasts get less coffee per cup because they need a higher ratio: more water per gram to extract properly.

15.8 g

1:12 · 0.330 g/ml, the darkest roasts (Recipe 1)

12.7 g

1:15 · 0.390 g/ml, the middle (Recipe 61)

10.6 g

1:18 · 0.450 g/ml, the lightest roasts (Recipe 121)

Tips

Getting the dose right

Weigh to 0.1 g

A 0.1 g scale makes a real difference at filter doses: at 10–15 g, half a gram is a noticeable change in strength.

Match the brewer

Choose a yield that suits your brewer. A big dose in a small cone can overflow or brew slowly, so move up a brewer size for larger yields.

Using cloth?

Cloth doesn't work as well at low doses. If you brew with a cloth drip pot, choose a larger yield so the dose is big enough.

Yield isn't for taste

Changing the yield changes the dose, not the taste. To fix sour or bitter, taste and press Extract More or Extract Less.
